Chris Waddle believes that Sheffield Wednesday should sign a player such as Stewart Downing if they want to get promotion
Former English player Chris Waddle has stated that Sheffield Wednesday should make some serious recruitment during the summer if they are serious about being promoted.
He said that they need experienced players in the team and that they should follow the example of Middlesbrough.
Just as Sheffield Wednesday, Boro was beaten in the play-offs last year and instead of letting themselves down, they made some brave decisions by signing important players such as Stewart Downing. Waddle believes that Sheffield Wednesday should do the same if they want to earn promotion next season.
For him, Sheffield Wednesday already have the foundation of a good team, but they need a few more additions if they want to guarantee their promotion next season. He said that they need at least five players to take the team to the next level and avoid going through the play-offs again. He said that the team should aim for automatic promotion and that the board should give the manager everything he needs in order to succeed.
For Waddle, you do not need to sign all the players on a permanent deal. He believes that Sheffield Wednesday can sign two or three players and then get a couple of good loan deals to improve the team further.
The former England star believes that it will not be easy to get promotion from the Championship as several teams will be competing for the promotion spots. He said that with Newcastle, Aston Villa and Norwich down it will be quite difficult to get out of the league, and it is important that Wednesday prepare themselves well. For him, there will be plenty of tough games in the Championship next season.
