Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray has revealed his delight in the versatility of veteran midfielder Stewart Downing. The former Liverpool man left Middlesbrough in the summer upon the expiry of his contract and snubbed several clubs before joining Blackburn Rovers.
Since making the move to Ewood Park, Downing has been the utility man featuring in midfield, either out on the left-wing or in the middle of the park, also offering an option at left-back.
His performances have surprised Mowbray who believes that there is more to come from his new signing. It is really no surprise that Downing has excelled so far, as he was known for his dedication towards hard work from his days at Liverpool and Aston Villa. It remains to be seen whether he can be able to push the struggling outfit into the promotion places.
Meanwhile, reports from England claims that, cross-town rivals Manchester City and Manchester United are engaged in a battle for highly-rated Rochdale defender Luke Matheson.
Matheson is regarded as the next best young talent in English football and made the news last month when he scored at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. Since then both Manchester Clubs have sent scout to watch the player.
The defender is a regular for England under-18 team and made his first-team debut for Rochdale at just 15 years in September 2018. He is regarded as a next-gen defender with his ability on the ball and good defensive positioning.
Rochdale are said to be keen on keeping the player for another season as they look to make the promotion places but could be tempted to sell if a sizeable offer comes through.
It is understood that both clubs have made contact with the player’s representatives and the final decision will ultimately make the final decision. It remains to be seen where the player would end but Manchester United appear to be favourites at this point.
