NEEDING FITNESS

West Ham United’s new signing Stewart Downing has admitted that he is probably not right up there as far as fitness is concerned, but, he is looking to make the most of each and every opportunity that comes his way.

Downing signed for West Ham United last month after leaving Liverpool. The transfer fee is yet to be revealed, but, it is reported to be close to 5 million Pounds.

The 29 years old left back got his first starting opportunity at West Ham last weekend in the game against Newcastle United. That match ended as a goalless draw, but, Downing’s outing was impressive and he might be given another go in Tuesday’s game against Cheltenham Town.

Talking to the reporters yesterday, Downing said, “The squad is not too big here. So, I guess everybody is going to get opportunities at some point of time. The important thing is that you cash on those opportunities and that’s what I am looking to do at the moment.”

When asked about the manager of West Ham United Sam Allardyce, Downing said, “Sam is a top manager. He treats everyone equally and that’s why he is well liked in the camp. Normally, at clubs, the guys who don’t get too many playing chances don’t like the manager. But, here, it’s not like that. Sam has a good tuning with everyone in the camp.”

When asked if making it to the England team for the World Cup next year is a target for him, Downing said, “Yes, it is. Now, I am at a club where I am going to play on a regular basis. All I need to do is to be consistent. If I do that, I will surely be rewarded.”

Downing has featured for England in 34 matches so far.
